07.07.2023so some of them probly had real use. at the time spying was done in persion and by stealing papper work. so having a few like the strong box that they didnt show any one would have been usful and you can flex on your friends

05.07.2023These style of desks were designed to be very functional. There’s obviously an element of aesthetics and “fun” to them, but they were primarily used to genuinely hide items and be used. The combination of exquisite woodworking, clockwork-derived mechanics and the multifunctional aspects of some are just amazing.

05.07.202311:01 another question: how much money did the owner of the box had to pay the creator so the solution wasn't leaked to his enemies. :))

05.07.2023Those old desks with hidden key-holes and drawers were used by Intelligence communities back in the days when they were truly secret (way before CIA, MI6, Mossad, etc).

05.07.2023i loved national tresure 1 and 2 would love a 3rd!!!!

05.07.2023No banks in those days, and if you didn't have the deed in hand to your property, it was not your property. Everything was written down, secrets had to be protected. Ladies who had this type of cabinetry usually had a lot of jewels they would want to hide. Plus, they were rich enough to enjoy the artistry of it. That's my take:)

05.07.2023OMG I was blown away by these – both the antique ones and the metal ones. They are soooo beautiful and intricate – I imagine people kept their jewels, coins, title deeds etc in those secret compartments but how lovely to keep them in gorgeous surroundings. I too am a fan of the National Treasure films and would love to see another one incoporating one of these desks. Please make more – I love watching them and your reactions to them 🥰

05.07.2023You could hide your weed in there.

04.07.2023Given that a lot of puzzles tend to lose their "wow" after being solved and opened repeatedly, like the desks. What is the one puzzle that you just love to solve and seems to never lose its fun factor?
Ava Harper
04.07.2023I think it would be really cool if you interviewed the puzzle makers you get your puzzles from

04.07.2023This is always amazing to watch! I am pretty sure some of the less intricate designs (for desks) were to be able to hide paperwork and money and valuables. But I also think some were statement pieces of wealth. I could be wrong though. They are fascinating none the less!
A great video & I can't wait to see what is to come!😊

04.07.2023The slide is flat I think
Rolf Gall
04.07.2023You asked what they would hide in some of their hidden compartments.
Well, an address book with all lovers, a lot of condoms and a pistol for suicide if the wife found the first two…😂
Marina Lodi
04.07.2023As long as I know, ppl in these times didn't had much faith in banks and stored money in their household, in the form of what they had like jewels. Also, we can't say the cities were too safe either, so why not scatter all you have in hidden drawers of "common" furniture?
Shablé
04.07.2023Indiana Jones had tables like that, and so did national treasure

04.07.2023They were hiding underage girls in those desks 😉

04.07.2023Egyptian kings couldn't find a puzzle good enough to stop robbers at death chambers, but i think if you look into first emperor of China his tomb has never been opened, because of many things, one there's curses, two the Chinese ppl have been in control of their leadership for the most part of the new millennium and would kill grave robber's. Just think of all the Temple's of doom puzzles in them, or in the next India Jones movie we get to see the last one, and hopefully they do good puzzle work

04.07.2023Desks like that were used by the rich to basically hide all their most valuable stuff right in plain sight. Things like gold and jewelry. Also deeds and other things. The rich back then were very very paranoid of robbers and pesants deciding to take their wealth and other valuables.

02.07.2023Oh my gosh I never new any of those existed not that extravagant there all awesome, I can see why you would want that last one.😍

02.07.2023I’m blown away by the Intricate details and the steps needed to open those antique vaults! Yes another National Treasure movie would be very cool. Thanks for sharing that Chris,I always thought those desks with multiple hidden compartments were just movie props,to see they’re indeed real is amazing.
Fi Kanera
02.07.2023Really enjoyed this, Chris! I agree with you, I always want another hidden compartment (& another, & another…) The beautiful craftsmanship makes these examples extra special, too.
Ana Ishihara
02.07.2023Drugs, I think they hid drugs. Maybe objects they considered magical? Spell books, Stones with powers, I like to belive that.

02.07.2023Wish a puzzle safe master would make a puzzle safe for you, and call it "The Unopened". Where even if you knew how to get inside, it would take at least 5minutes to open.

30.06.2023That was cool!!! My grandmother told me her desk was used to hideaway liquor in it and her expensive jewellery so no one new about it I wish I had picture to show you 😥

30.06.2023First, everyone has secrets so there is a need to keep them secret. Secondly, it is a showcase of the furniture maker's art. Thirdly, to have a piece by such an artist was indeed a flex.

30.06.2023Trump could've used one of these desks! The FBI wouldn't have found anything!!
